How Data Roaming Works on Nigerian Networks

Data roaming allows your Nigerian SIM card to access mobile internet through partner networks in foreign countries. When you travel abroad with your MTN, Airtel, Glo, or 9mobile SIM and your phone connects to a local carrier's network in that country, data usage is billed back to your Nigerian account at roaming rates — which are almost always significantly higher than local data rates.

Nigerian carriers have bilateral roaming agreements with carriers in dozens of countries. The coverage map varies by operator: MTN has the widest international footprint due to its pan-African presence and global partnerships, while Glo's roaming coverage is more limited, particularly outside West Africa.

One important technical point: roaming must typically be enabled on your account before it will work abroad. Some accounts have it disabled by default to prevent accidental high charges. The steps below cover how to activate it on each major Nigerian network.

Activation Steps by Network

MTN Nigeria

To activate international roaming on MTN, dial *123# and navigate to the International Roaming option, or send a text with the keyword ROAMING to 131. You can also activate it through the MyMTN app under the Services section. MTN offers roaming packages that bundle a set data volume for specific countries or regions — these are significantly cheaper than pay-per-use rates and are worth purchasing before departure. Airtel Nigeria

Airtel roaming can be activated by dialing *442# or by calling Airtel customer service at 111. Airtel also offers international roaming packages — ask specifically about the Smart Roaming bundles which provide daily data allowances in select countries. Note that Airtel roaming rates outside the Airtel Africa footprint can be considerably more expensive.

Glo Nigeria

Glo roaming activation requires contacting Glo customer service directly at 121, as the network does not offer a simple self-service USSD code for roaming setup as of 2026. Glo roaming coverage is most reliable within West and Central Africa. For travel to Europe, North America, or Asia, users frequently report poor coverage or unavailability of Glo roaming, making it the weakest option among major Nigerian carriers for international travel.

9mobile (formerly Etisalat Nigeria)

9mobile roaming is activated by dialing *200# or by calling 200. Like the others, 9mobile offers bundled roaming plans at better rates than standard roaming. Coverage is reasonable in Europe and parts of Asia through its Etisalat heritage partnerships.

Smarter Alternatives to Network Roaming for Nigerian Travelers

Nigerian carrier roaming rates, even with bundles, are frequently uncompetitive compared to local SIM cards or eSIM plans available at your destination. A 1GB roaming bundle from a Nigerian carrier for a European destination might cost 10,000 to 20,000 Naira or more. A local SIM card purchased at a European airport or an eSIM from a provider like Airalo for the same region could deliver 10GB for $8 to $12.

Option 1 - Local SIM at destination: Purchase a prepaid SIM on arrival. This works well if you are willing to temporarily lose access to your Nigerian number and your device is unlocked. Inform contacts of the temporary number change before you depart.

Option 2 - eSIM for travel data: If your device supports eSIM (most iPhones from XS onward, Pixel phones, select Samsung Galaxy models), an eSIM from a travel data provider gives you local data rates without swapping physical cards. Your Nigerian SIM stays in your device for calls and SMS.

Option 3 - Portable Wi-Fi router (MiFi): Some travelers rent or purchase a pocket MiFi device with a local SIM at their destination. This works for groups or when traveling with family, as multiple devices share one data connection.

For most Nigerian travelers making occasional international trips, the practical recommendation is: activate roaming on your Nigerian SIM as a backup for calls and emergencies, but use a local SIM or eSIM as your primary data source for the trip. This combination keeps you reachable on your Nigerian number while avoiding the high data roaming costs.
